what is the driving table?

To put it simply the driving table in Oracle is the table that is joined to other tables in an SQL query.

For example: select * from order, cust where order.custno = cust.custno;

In this case the driving table might be CUST, we would fetch rows from CUST in a full
scan and then find the rows in ORDER that match. CUST is the driving table.
